My Media Habits

by - December 06, 2018

Oof, media habits.

As a Gen-Z-er, (or at least as someone born into a world of modern technology) I would say I have a certain level of awareness when it comes to my media habits.

Do I know how much I consume?  Yep.

Do I know it's bad for me?  Uh-huh.

Well, what are you doing woman?!? You know it's bad for you, why do you keep doing it???  Inherent numbness to my own pain??????

But enough of that, here's the lil table...

Type of media
Kind of media/pop culture product
Hours spent daily

Purpose
What you thinkof your media usage
Social Media
(Primarily) Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest
(Occasionally)
Facebook
5 hours
Updates and information on my friends and the world, art inspiration, entertainment.
I'm certainly more of an observer than an influencer, I don't post much, relatively speaking. That being said, my usage of social media is largely a waste of time.
Traditional Media
Books
About an hour
Leisure
Since a few years ago, my book reading habits have been waning, and its only recently I've been picking back up on it. Definitely should read more...
New Media
Youtube
2 hoursEntertainment, information, education
To be totally honest, a majority of my YT video consumption is just mind-numbing rubbish, like mukbang videos, ASMR videos. Should probably invest more time in more educational videos.
Mobile Communications Technology
Cellphone
5 hours
Everything just mentioned above + writing
Has the potential to be helpful and beneficial, instead I find myself just wasting a lot of time.
Related and Emerging Technologies
Laptop
2 hours
Writing, movies
Largely beneficial, but mostly a distraction from important things like school work.

Look, I know that my media habits are mostly harmful seeing as they keep me from more important things like school work, chores, etc., but I like to think it somehow serves as relief from all the stress I have to face in the "real world".

Uh, Dani? Doesn't a lot of your stress actually come from your media usage?

Good point ominous italics, I guess with that being said, I should try to invest more time in what one might consider to be the positive side of media: educational materials, inspirational materials and others.

Suuuuure Dani, you go ahead and do that...

Gee thanks for the boost of confidence. Really though, eventually, I'll get around to doing that, but right now, let me see what my NSC friends are up to on Twitter...

dat be all!

Until next time,
